"The Wizard of Oz" Room

I was over at a friend’s house for game night and got to preview her wonderful new room addition to her house.  It is dedicated to “The Wizard of Oz” which is her very most favorite movie of all time.  She also is an avid antique – flea market buff and has a marvelous collection of all things Oz!  I just have to share these pictures of her adorable memorial!
She had this beautiful curio cabinet custom made for her precious collection.  Notice the “yellow and brick” walls!!

The last two shelves include more music boxes, record albums, first edition movies, games, and the cutest little bobble-heads of the Oz gang.

“Lovebird Lane” Quilt Completed

In a previous post I showed you the Lovebird Lane quilt kit that I had just received.  Well, it is finished and I want to show it to you so here it is.
This is the whole quilt (duh)!
Lovebird Lane 1

Center block – the flag on the post is 3D – it is only attached at the top.   The little house (on the left) has cute buttons for the flowers!
This one has a couple of things going on in it … the string that is hanging from the post (under the bird) is embroidery thread attached to real buttons.  They just float on top of the quilt.  And the tiny quilt folded over the side of the basket is 3D … again only attached at the top.

This block is called "Lovebird Cottage" (name on the house).
This one is a mailbox with a surprise in it ... mama bird on nest with eggs!  Of course it would be on top of a basket filled with eggs!

The outer tulip borders really scared me when I started making them.  So many pieces!  I thought it was going to be a real nightmare when I tried to attach them, but it actually went together very well!  Whew!!  The gigantic rick rack also went on very smoothly!  A great pattern designer – it had no mistakes – easy to follow – everything went together with no fuss!

Lovebird Lane 7
For this quilt I did machine zig-zag stitch to apply all the applique pieces.  A first for me!

I still have my “Sweet Tea” quilt kit to make up and when I do, I will post pictures.
One of these days, I need to get more of my quilts actually quilted and bound so I can show them.  I’m behind about 5 quilts!  I also need to update my Etsy store.  I did add photos of all my quilts to my Facebook page so check them out if you are interested as soon as I figure out how to add a link on this blog!
Hugs to you all,

"Kaleidoscope Quilts #1 and #2"

The other two quilts I made for my friend are queen sized with kaleidoscope blocks using “Marrakesh with Metallic” fabric from Fabric Traditions.  Each kaleidoscope block is made up of eight individually fussy cut triangle pieces of fabric that are identical.  When sewn together into an octagon, they form an entirely unique pattern that can’t be found on the actual fabric because you just created it!  It’s a great way to make totally unique one-of-a-kind quilts, but note that it takes a lot of time and fabric and leaves a lot of scrap.  Of course, it never hurts to have a lot of leftovers to add to your stash!

Here’s a picture of Quilt #1:  The quilt was too large for my wall so I hung is sideways and then turned the picture.  That is why you see the waves in it.  Also, the colors are showing up right.  They are very vibrant colors including dark chocolate, turquoise, greens and beiges all outlined with shiny gold!

The borders include a row of various sized small blocks of each fabric used in the quilt then a small strip of dark chocolate followed by the final floral print.  I used the floral print as backing also.

The total effect of the kaleidoscopes is mesmerizing and totally reminiscent of the ones we played with as children!

Quilt #2 uses the same fabrics as #1, but I changed the layout a little.  Some “square in a square” blocks are alternated with the large kaleidoscope blocks and I added small ones to the inner border blocks.  Here are the pics of #2:

I actually prefer Quilt #2.  What about you?

“Tea And Sweets” Quilt

I just finished making three quilts for a friend who will be giving them to family members for Christmas presents.  The first one is a twin sized one for a very special little grandchild.  It’s called “Tea and Sweets” and the fabrics used are a wonderfully sweet collection designed by Studio R for South Sea Imports.

Quilt is too long for my wall quilt hanger!

Sweet Tea 1

The four outer corner blocks are from a panel.

The main blocks have a fussy cut center block focusing on a teapot or special sweet!

Sweet Tea 6
The outer border fabric consists of a large top collection of all the teapots, cups and sweets.  The middle fabric shows all the teapots and sweets.  The lower portion of the border print shows small individual pictures of all the treats!  It’s all backed with a collage of all the goodies all jumbled up!  A very sweet quilt!

I loved making this quilt for my friend.  Seeing her face glow when she saw it was the most wonderful Christmas present I could ever hope for!

Next post … next quilt!
